Position Description

 

Job Purpose:
Family Support Specialists provide support and education for parents and children by assisting them in the acquisition of parenting and/or life skills. Responsibilities include work in client homes and collaboration with other sources to advocate for clients.          
     
Essential Job Duties:
● Provides home-based education and support to assist clients in acquiring skills such as parenting, household management and emotional regulation. 
● Engages in tasks necessary to the provision of direct service, including but not limited to: 
    ◦ Paperwork including progress notes, reports, documentation, assessments, service plans and discharge summaries completed in accordance with agency policies/procedures; and
    ◦ Driving to and from home-based appointments.
● Collaborates with other agencies and service providers including case managers and foster care specialists to advocate on behalf of clients.
● Participates in consultation supervision sessions as required.
● Collects statistics and implements Quality Improvement procedures as defined by program assignment.
 
Other Duties:
● Completes other responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.
● Completes training necessary to perform position and necessary for professional growth.
● Facilitates a team atmosphere by working in partnership with other agency staff and promotes a positive working environment.
● Represents the agency and programs in a positive manner to clients, community organizations and the public in general.
●  Shows flexibility with regard to work schedule (to be determined by supervisor). Evening or weekend work is required.     
 
 
 
 
Job Requirements:
● Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field with two years of experience in a Human Services Field preferred;
● Strong direct service professional skills, including:
    ◦ Commitment to empowering others to solve their own problems,
    ◦ Belief in a nurturing family as the ideal environment for a person and that people have the capacity to grow and change,
    ◦ Ability to develop respectful relationships with persons served to help them gain skills and confidence,
    ◦ Ability to work collaboratively with coworkers and other service providers, and
    ◦ Ability to maintain a helping role, intervene appropriately to meet service goals, and set appropriate limits.
● Experience with at-risk families.
● Required knowledge of and skills in:
    ◦ The child welfare system,
    ◦ The needs of neglected, abused and exploited children and adults,
    ◦ Family functioning, and
    ◦ Child development.
● Skill in engaging resistant families.
● Ability to analyze and make recommendations regarding individual cases and (frequently simultaneously) to analyze and apply larger, systemic issues.
● Ability to make independent decisions and act accordingly and, when appropriate, to seek the counsel of a supervisor or consultant. 
● Strong verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
●  Valid driver’s license and insurance that meets agency requirements.
●  Ability to interact with clients with sensitivity to diverse cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
●  Ability to read, analyze and interpret forms, documents, evaluations and procedure manuals.
●  Ability to respond to inquiries and possible complaints from clients and other providers.
● Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
● General mathematical skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, computation of ratios, etc.
